Less a single coherent argument than a series of meditations, this book introduces many of the concepts that would become foundational to Marxist thought and critical theory, more generally, including alienation, exploitation, and dialectical materialism. Its subjects are wide-ranging, such as property law, labor practices, marriage, and the philosophy of history, but it takes as its starting point both Enlightenment philosophy and responses to the Enlightenment by German Romanticism, French socialism, and British political economy. The book has been receiving renewed attention in critical theory, studies of the Anthropocene, and the new materialisms for its conceptualization of species-being, understood as the process through which the human species and non-human nature co-constitute one another.
