Capitalism in the Web of Life: Ecology and the Accumulation of Capital

Written from a Marxist perspective, this book examines the emergence of capitalist modernity in terms of the extraction of natural resources. It analyzes the ways in which the Enlightenment ideology of history as progress depends on reducing “Nature” to a mere resource or raw material for the use of the human species; and it offers an alternative method of social analysis premised on the “double internality” of capitalism and nature, or the idea that capitalism and nature are historical phenomena that determine one another. Moore proposes “the law of Cheap Nature” to explain why capitalism needs to constantly search for cheap/free raw materials in order to maintain a rate of profit.
